A timeline of the Roman Republic
Patrician (Upper class Roman citizen) and Plebeians (lower class Roman citizen)
This is an image of the twelve tables of Rome. The twelve tables of Rome are a set of laws that gave Plebeians more rights.
Rome changed from a Monarchy to a Republic because one person, the king or queen, had too much power in a monarchy. Rome decided to change there government, Rome became a Republic so they had Checks and balances. Checks and Balances is that everyone checks each other so one person doesn't have too much power and become power crazy.
The United States government and the Roman Republic have many similarity and differences. One similarity is that in both governments not one single person has full power. A difference is that the Republic has two people with the most power, the Consuls, and the United States have only one, the President. Another similarity is that they both have Senates and Senators. A cool difference is that anyone (over 18) can vote in the United States, but only free men can vote in the Roman Republic. The last similarity is that in both no one has full power.
Daily Life in Rome
In ancient Rome, Life was very interesting with their polytheistic religion. The Romans had very interesting entertainment, religion, military, and just everyday living!
Here is a little about Roman entertainment. Roman entertainment was very interesting. Romans could either go to the Circus Maximus to see horse and/or chariot racing. They could also go to the Colosseum, a very large amphitheater,to witness great gladiator fights first hand, or just to see public speaking. The Theater was a place where they could go to see either tragic or comedy plays, where only men acted but the color of the mask they wore determined what gender they were acting as.
Religion in Rome was also very interesting. Romes religion was polytheistic at first, before having a mass-conversion the Christianity, and was based off of ancient Greek religion. Rome literally took Greek gods, people and places and gave them Roman names. The Pantheon was a temple with a 5,000 ton dome on the top with a circular oculus that was 29ft by 29ft to let light in the large room.
Back then, the Roman military was very powerful and Rome had one of the largest standing armies ever until they spread their armies to thin and got defeated. Soldiers lived in forts where one or two legionnaires were in charge of the many soldiers that lived there. Roman Ports were also used for military purposes, but mainly for trade.
Normal life in Rome included the forum Where people could publicly speak, shop, eat, and more. They could also go to the bath houses where they could bathe and also socialize. 1.3%-2.2% of Rome lived in Villas, houses for the rich and constructed to collect water, the rest lived in houses or apartments.
In conclusion, Roman life was definitely not boring.
